MOTIVATION

The only reason that Verity is an auror is that the DMLE offered her a bargain: her forgery expertise for her freedom. There are things she likes about the job, which she finds challenging and engaging, but she shows very little dedication to advancing in her department or long-term investment in her career. She's here for her sentence, and then she's out. That said, she finds this hugely preferable to being imprisoned (and privately, to her criminal career as well), so she toes the line well enough without being micromanaged. Puzzles, oddities, and strange occurrences pique her interest. Drudgery, deception, and conflict do not.
APPLICATION

She couldn't explain how she applies her skills to her work to you if she tried. Practical magic has always come easily to her, and she can take apart and reassemble any piece of magic with ease. Asking her to explain her process yields underwhelming results: she's not interested in catching other people up if she gets ahead of them. Results are everything to her; she plays fast and loose with experimental magic, and is always looking for faster (read: lazier) ways to accomplish her goals. Shortcuts are taken. Corners are cut. But she always delivers.
RISK

Verity's proclivity for going rogue makes her a slightly risky asset to a field team. She's best handled in the office, under the observation of several superiors. Otherwise, she has a tendency to wander off. Sometimes this is because she's spotted a lead nobody else did and is following up on it, but sometimes it's because she got distracted. In general, the department also considers a "flight risk", and while they have several magical tracking spells on her, she is very rarely allowed to go anywhere alone, lest she disappear entirely.
INTEGRITY

For an ex-criminal, she's actually pretty straightforward. She's never had much of a talent for lying, and is fairly forthright about her feelings and thoughts - a classic open book. Running her mouth like she does can get her in trouble, though. She doesn't have much respect for the social hierarchy of the auror world - the more established someone is in the department, the more suspect Verity tends to be of their motivations. Similarly, if she thinks a department rule is stupid or standing in her way, she doesn't mind bending it to get the job done. All of this means semi-frequent write ups by her superiors which have the energy of a disappointed grade school teacher saying "she's not living up to her potential".
ATTITUDE

Verity is fun, but not particularly reliable. She's a better friend than coworker. In the workplace she tends to struggle with collaboration, especially when she's expected to defer to her superiors. She always wants to do things her way (read: the smartest way) and has very little patience for people who think more slowly than she does. Luckily for her, she's able to match wits with a lot of tech specialists, and when she does she can be a valuable partner. Her major contribution to office culture is organizing pub crawls, something she does on an irresponsibly frequent basis.

EARLY LIFE

Her childhood wasn't marred by strife or tragedy; she had a normal life. Grew up in the family home with her parents (probably would've been better off divorced, but stuck it out) and her older siblings (none of whom turned out to be criminals). Despite her intelligence, she did poorly in school, and graduated from Ilvermorny with no honors and no college offers.
CAREER HISTORY

Straight out of high school she started working as an art department assistant on film sets, nomaj and magical projects alike. She enjoyed this work, but made very little money doing it, and started picking up questionable side hustles to support herself (including one multi-level marketing scheme where she climbed the ranks quickly and bailed before it collapsed, her great accomplishment to date).

While hocking magical props she'd swiped from various film sets, she met her first boyfriend, a petty con artist. They worked together for many years creating fraudulent spellwork and selling it at a tidy profit. Verity eventually surpassed him in skill and left him for Duke Burnett's outfit, a ring of much more accomplished apocryphists.

Verity and Duke were a formidable team, and by the time she was apprehended by the DMLE she was making a neat profit off of selling counterfeit top-of-the-line brooms (which, after a few days, were barely even any good for sweeping the floor). She was caught in a sting operation, and made a deal with the aurors who captured her -- she would loan them her forgery expertise and help them catch Duke if charges against her were dropped. They agreed, she helped take down her (now ex) boyfriend, and she was shipped off to Archangel for auror training.

Always a lackluster student, Verity assumed she'd struggle to keep up with the curriculum. Surprisingly, she found she took to it like a duck to water. Auror training challenged and interested her in ways high school never had, and she was an exemplary student (although she was also generally regarded as a troublemaker, oftentimes using her streetwise cool and worldy experience to convince her fellow young recruits to get up to ill-advised antics with her). After she graduated, she was put first on a forgery taskforce and then tapped for Operation Crowbar by her commanding officer.
